Ken Griffey Jr. Is Back! (Swoon)
Vodpod videos no longer available.
Ken Griffey Jr. decided to return to the Seattle Mariners today, and will get a chance to play left field and DH, according to the Mariner front office brass. The Mariners are pushing this move as one not geared by sentimentality, but legitimate baseball purposes. While the veracity of that statement is dubious at best, it does add a great deal of buzz to what would have been just another rebuilding year in the Pacific Northwest.
Griffey was rumored and even confirmed at one point to be heading to Atlanta, but calls by both Harold Reynolds and (gasp) Willie Mays seemed to have swung the tide back in Seattle’s favor. Mariner officials believe that Griffey alone will get at least 200,000 additional seats sold during the next season. Griffey signed a one year/$2 million deal, with incentives up to $4.5 million.
No word yet if Griffey has taken a walkthrough of the Mariner DL list yet, but he should by the end of the week.
