Enjoy LT While You Can?

Darren Sproles of the San Diego Chargers has enjoyed a fantastic season in 2008/2009, and will conveniently become an unrestricted free-agent at the season’s end. After watching Michael Turner flee to Atlanta and summarily whip LaDainian Tomlinson in pretty much every stat category this year, Chargers GM A.J. Smith has a tough choice ahead of him. Does he let yet another LT heir leave for a bigger payday, or does he take a tough look in the mirror and start thinking about life after the Chunky Soup spokesman?

If the Chargers decide to move on, and move LT, this likely will be the last year they can get a decent return for the running back. There are several teams that are on the cusp that would love his services, even if it means sacrificing some major draft picks to get there (the Cardinals and Steelers come to mind immediately).

If the Bolts decide to deal LT, there is a very good chance both Chris Wells of  Ohio State and Knowshon Moreno of Georgia, will still be there when SD ponders its choice with the No. 16 pick. While most mock drafts currently have the Bolts taking Brian Cushing (LB) from USC, if LT is delt… teaming one of those two backs with Sproles wouldn’t be a bad future for the Chargers running game.

And all it will take is saying goodbye to the greatest player in your team’s history.

It can’t be THAT hard, right?

LT is not going anywhere. The Chargers are well under the cap for next season (projected to be about $25M under right now). They will slap the franchise tag on Sproles, meaning he’ll get at least $5-6M to stay with the Bolts for one season or, if he signs elsewhere, the Chargers will get two 1st round picks. Most likely, they’ll franchise Sproles and trade him for a 1st and 3rd (maybe not in this draft) and get some o-line help (right side). Ideally, Sproles signs a 5 year deal with the Bolts (LT has 3 left on his deal) and they use Sproles like they use to use Ronnie Harmon (or how the Pats use Kevin Faulk) .. it’ll keep LT fresher and get Sproles his touches. Despite what people think, LT wants to WIN more than he cares about stats.
