Southern California Collapses… Ben Bates Saves Day on ESPN Bakersfield

In the wake of tidal wave that just rolled through Los Angeles football, Ben Bates seeks to bring some sense to the world. His dulcet tones have the power to soothe all that ails the common man (and/or Trojan fan). With this tragedy comes the good news that Ben will be making his much anticipated return to ESPN Radio Bakersfield on, Home Turf with Corey Costelloe. Read more…

Identifying Greatness

French revolutionist and Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, once said, “Greatness be nothing, unless it be lasting.”

Typically when we think of greatness in sports, our minds race into three phases of thoughts. Read more…

State of the (Sports) Union Address

January 27, 2010 Leave a comment

In joining the millions of American’s watching President Obama’s State of the Union Address I couldn’t help but notice how funny it looks to have a standing - or at least, half-standing) – ovation every second or third sentence. Where else does that happen? Certainly not in sports.

Can you imagine if Brett Favre gave a State of the Union? Read more…

Hey, look at that. I just combined the three top stories of Friday into one blog title.  ZOMG. It’s a busy sports weekend, with a full plate of basketball and football to satiate even the most hardened baseball fan.  By the way, let me repeat what I’ve told several people this week.  Read more…

Top-50 Places to Call Home (For Sports Entertainment)

Baseball Map

Everyone loves a good list of top things, especially when we can relate to them. That’s why list blogs like the Top-10 sports movies, Top-25 game day snacks, or the one you are currently reading work. We all love sports (Why else would you be reading this?), we all watch movies and we all shovel down gobs of greasy lard. Most of us, actually, far too frequently.

As most of you know, my wife and I live near Tacoma, Washington. And just about everyone knows how critical I am of the state and it’s sports scene, or lack there of. We’ve been talking lately of places we would like to move, so I got to thinking; if I could move to any state, based on sports entertainment, where would I go?

But I couldn’t stop at just one, so I made a list. Read more…

Discussion: Worst Fantasy Trades EVER

Phillies Lee Baseball

Amidst all the crazy, “Will they, won’t they?” MLB trade rumors flying around, I’ve seen roughly six or seven fantasy deals go down in my Keeper League in the last two days, with Saturday night as our deadline.

Everywhere you look – it’s trading season. Read more…

We Talkin About Practice

July 16, 2009 1 comment

I play in a low level, co-ed softball league with NIHD’s own, Ben Bates. Not to brag, but I don’t think there’s much doubt that Ben and I are the two best players on the team – especially defensively. Apparently our coach scheduled a practice for this past Wednesday, which we didn’t know about (and I had to work anyway). Without saying a word to us, when we showed up at the game today, we were dropped from our usual first and third spots in the lineup, to the end and were the only two players to be benched to start the game. We each ended up playing about half the game. We found it rather bizarre that we were benched for missing a practice that we didn’t know about. Either way, it reminded me of NIHD’s flavor of the month sports video.

Practice? We talkin’ about practice?

Play Like a Kid Again

Trampoline Basketball

When I was a kid, if you couldn’t find me on a field playing a sport, you could probably find me in my room, driveway or backyard pretending to play one. I can’t even begin to count the number of games/ sports I created on the rough streets of Quail Ave, (*Note: Quail Ave was definitely middle class suburbia, about four blocks from both my elementary and middle schools and in no way can it be construed as the streets.) in fact, I’ve likely forgotten more games I played as a youngster than I know how to play now.

But the days of trampoline slam dunk contests, Ben strikes out random major leaguer  X with a racquetball against the garage (That one didn’t really have a name, but it’s pretty self explanatory) and roller-blade football are long gone. Aren’t they? Read more…

The Real You

What we see is the real you…

I think it was the great American poet Skee-Lo who once said, “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller.” With these poignant words sailing off on the breeze of a cool summer day in 1995, Skee opened a Pandora ’s Box that will never be closed. He spoke to the greatest of American tragedies, unrecognized potential. Read more…
